Canon 50MM 1.8

The Canon 50MM 1.8 is probably the best lens of it's type you can buy for the money. You can find it for $50-60 dollars most places in the US.  The low light ability of this lens is incredible. I use mainly for portrait shoots.  The only thing I wish it had was the distance measurements on the lens.
