This page seems to come up a lot in the search engines. You can read more about the Quantaray lens here NOTE. I ended up returning the Canon. The auto-focus did not work well with the EOS 300D You can email me with questions at kheldar@rivinus.com Review Canon 75-300MM Mark III AF vs. Quantaray 28-200MM AF Marlene and I got a gift card from my Dad and Susan for Best Buy. Marlene let me use that to buy a 75-300 MM Canon AF zoom lens and I let her use some money leftover from her parents to buy a Food Saver vacuum packy thingy. It shrink wraps food so it stays fresher longer. The Quantaray lens is a 28-200 MM focal length lens with an aperture of 3.8 to 5.6. The Canon has a focal length of 75-300MM with an aperture range of 4.0 to 5.6. The ranging aperture means that the available open aperture gets smaller as the lens is zoomed out more. i.e. 4.0 at 75 MM and 5.6 at 300MM. I was testing to see if there were any differences in the lenses at the 200 MM focal length. I am currently selling the 28-200 on EBay and wanted to make sure that the Canon was an improvement. The 28 has been fine, but I want the longer focal length. So I took the camera and lenses downstairs. I set the honey bottle on the table to use as a test subject. The tissues at the left were used to make sure the Canon was at the same focal length as the Quantaray. I setup the tripod about 6 feet from the table. I shot both shots in manual mode on the Rebel with a shutter speed of 1/20th of a second. I set the aperture at the lowest setting for each lens. Here was the results Original Images
Notice the the Canon picture is much brighter than the one with the Quantaray. That is because the aperture only closed to 4.5 at 200MM. That means that I will be able to use this lens in lower light settings than the Canon. You can see the differences in the lens clarity from the cropped images. Note the image on the left has slightly blurred lettering. The image in the middle, from the Canon, is much clearer. It is not perfect, but you have to take into account how cropped the image is in this picture. The last image is from the Canon at the full 300 MM setting. Note it is slightly darker because the aperture closed down to the lowest setting on the lens-5.6.
I think I will be very happy with my new purchase. Thank you very much Dad and Susan.
